FOOD & WINE IN WINDSOR

Francesco's Seafood Restaurant and Café

Address: Macquarie Park & Bridge Street, Windsor
Phone: 02 4587 8198
Hours: Café hours, Wednesday-Saturday, 9 am-5 pm; Seafood buffet hours, Friday-Saturday, from 6:00pm; Sunday from noon

If you want a river setting and outdoor seating, Francesco's is the only "river restaurant" to be found in Windsor. Set in Macquarie Park, the Hawkesbury riverbank is just metres away. Nearby is a terrific playground for children, while just out of sight is the "Windsor Beach" - a sandy hillside for picnicking and play.
The café serves up fresh seafood baskets or plates for lunch - crab, prawns, mussels, oysters, and calamari - or traditional burgers and wraps. Fish and chips and calamari and chips are big favourites with the lunch crowd, and often the verandah will be packed.
On weekends, the restaurant serves up a full menu while the seafood buffet is available Friday and Saturday evenings and on Sundays. We have yet to try the buffet - that is on our list of "must do's" during the holidays. Bookings are recommended. If you want a group function, this is the place as seating is plentiful and Francesco's ambience is quite festive. Parking is plentiful - and easy.

Windsor RSL Club

Address: Corner of Argyle & Mileham Streets, South Windsor
Phone: 02 4587 6900; 02 4587 6999

Windsor RSL is currently undergoing changes in appearance, in menu and in services. Recent changes in management have brought forth new ideas and innovations.
The club is abuzz with daily activity and excitement, still we found a quiet corner for a coffee, a sweet and a catch-up with friends. The staff is always very helpful and friendly. The bistro serves up a typical Aussie menu at very modest prices. Weekly specials are listed on the club's website. Don't overlook the Sunday menu - our favourite roasts.

This restaurant feels like a party - it is spacious and has high ceilings, lots of windows, and a wrap-around verandah overlooking the runway of the Richmond RAAF base. You can choose either a table or booth; the staff will accommodate your needs if your party is greater than six. It is a child-friendly place!

As for the menu, it is varied and it is tasty. Servings are hearty and steaks are served up by friendly wait staff. The house specialty is the '18-hour slow cooked' prime rib steak - and it is oh so tender! For dessert try the rocky road sundae. Warning: this irresistible dessert is served up for two; go it alone if you dare. Friday's "Hawaiian Night" is likely to be fun - any cocktail, only $8. Wait staff will be appropriately attired, "Aloha"!

At all times, the ambience is fun and festive. Sitting on the verandah, you can often watch the 'big ones' at the RAAF base practise 'touch and go' landings - one of our favourite lunch settings on an autumn afternoon when the Hawkesbury heat has subsided!

Customers return again and again - Hog's Breath in Clarendon is casual and service is great - a perfect recipe for great experience!

Harvest Restaurant @ Sebel Resort Hawkesbury

Harvest Restaurant at Windsor SebelAddress: 61 Hawkesbury Valley Way, Windsor
Phone: 02 4577 4222
Hours: Daily 6 pm–late

Located in the Sebel Resort on Hawkesbury Valley Way, Harvest Restaurant offers up contemporary Australian cuisine each evening. Grilled beef and lamb are favourites on the a la carte menu. Vegetable and fruits are 'Hawkesbury fresh' - farmers are literally 'just down the road'. The Friday night seafood buffet is very popular, so plan early.

We recently had an opportunity to have lunch at Sebel. The Harvest dining room is not open for lunch, but the kitchen is - you can order from the bar. We were naughty recently - the burger and fries were terrific and beautifully served.
