PENRITH LAKES

Penrith lakes Map

We?ve expanded our reach to cover the exciting area at the edge of Penrith. The Penrith Lakes offers many options for a great family day out: terrific adventure sports, recreational facilities at the International Regatta Centre, and a large Aboriginal Cultural and Education Centre, Muru Mittigar in Penrith lakes.

Built for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Penrith's International Regatta Centre is the perfect destination for families with energetic kids. At the Regatta Centre, bikes, kayaks, and canoes are available for hire. Walking, biking and rollerblading trails are all situated by a large lake. You'll also find picnic and barbecue amenities set among leafy trees. Plenty of parking provides ease when you must haul bikes, toys, food, etc.

If you?re headed for a long weekend into Richmond or the Kurrajong highlands along Bells Line of Road, the route along Castlereagh Road is a peaceful scenic drive past lakes, citrus groves, rural Agnes Banks and striking views of the Blue Mountains.

Once travelling west on the M4, exit at Northern Road, Penrith. Turn right (North) onto Northern Road and you will soon see signage for the International Regatta Centre. Continue on Northern Road - passing Nepean Hospital (on right). Cross Great Western Highway, continue on Northern Road - name changes to Richmond Road - for about 10 minutes depending upon traffic. At Andrews Road bear left. After 2.3 kilometres, take the second left at the roundabout onto Old Castlereagh Road.

Muru Mittigar Aboriginal Cultural and Educational Centre entrance is at Gate D/1. A garden café for refreshments and light meals and a retail store are conveniently located. The Centre has a 'drop by' policy; however, larger groups will need to book ahead to enjoy the full experience of Aboriginal activities - from boomerang throwing, didgeridoo crafting and painting, to Koori art workshops and a guided tour of the Centre.

For thrills and a major workout, drive back to the Old Castlereagh Road roundabout. Take the first exit (left) onto Castlereagh Road. Within metres, turn left onto McCarthy's Lane and then into Penrith Whitewater Stadium. Bookings are essential. Whitewater is a non-smoking venue and alcohol, if rafting, is prohibited. Read the fine print- a breathalyser test is required.

The area's attractions are varied and unique. Make a day of it - you'll remember it fondly!
