Sassafras Creek is a village unto itself and has become a cultural centre for Kurrajong showcasing art, music and food. First, it's a smart upscale restaurant with stunning views from the large dining area out to the hills of Grose Vale. With a menu to match the views, locals bring their guests to Sassafras Creek when they want to show off their village eateries.

The large room fills quickly for weekend breakfast, spilling out to the shaded rear deck or the patio out the front. (Happily, on a beautiful October day, we gained a table on the rear deck for lunch.) Produce and meats are Hawkesbury fresh. The food is not compounded or overshadowed by sauces, but rather, it is clean - the simplicity and taste of freshness are a foodie's dream.

Sassafras now has a wine licence and carries a range of boutique wines from Orange and Mudgee. Bookings are recommended especially for Friday or Saturday evenings. Sundays, Sassafras Creek closes at 5 pm. Stay tuned on the website for evenings of music - dancing and dining is very popular.

When dining or just having an afternoon coffee and cake, you are surrounded by art - beautiful fine art. Displayed on walls, shelves and tables are paintings or photography, china ceramics, or unusual jewellery - the exhibition changes frequently as the owners find new or established artists.

And as you enter Sassafras Creek, cookbooks, homewares, candles, charming cottage china, some beautiful shawls for winter and large French provincial style furniture are all for sale. It's an up-market general store - 21st century style!

Kasarina Vineyard

We include Kasarina Vineyard as it sits at the foot of Hawkesbury Highlands, where the hills are gentle but the environment and mood is similar to their neighbours farther up Bells Line of Road. A few kilometres from the busy centre of North Richmond, the rolling hills of rural Hawkesbury are home to Kasarina Vineyard. In paddocks that years ago were dairy farms, the Symons family in 2000 established a long-planned vineyard.

The Red Throat brand is inspired by the recovery of the Eastern Water Dragon family of lizards. Flavour wise, the wine sits between a Cab-Sav and Merlot both in taste and style - fruitiness as a young wine. We sampled a mature wine - 2005 - which was dry and robust, with a sharp burst to the palate.

Kasrina Cellar Door is a modern shiny example of the new technological advances in wine production.
